Living near work is everyone’s dream. Less commute hour greatly improves the quality of life. I was commuting to Johns Hopkins University from College Park MD for almost one year. It takes for 2 hours round trip everyday, door to door, and bad weather events or accidents easily elongate commuting hour. During the weekdays, I couldn’t imagined having my evening life. It was already passed 6 pm when I arrived home. I couldn’t make any plan for a special evening nor do some productive self developing activities.
Was I sad about it? Sadly no, I even didn’t realize how sad the situation was. Because for my entire life, I didn’t have any chance to leave near my work. I was very used to commute long way and having no private life during the weekdays. When I started my career in a city, I had to took 2 metro lines and 1 bus to go to work. Therefore, having a long commute to work for Johns Hopkins was not an issue to me at all.
However, one day, I was just roaming Johns Hopkins Human Resource website. And somehow I was searching for Johns Hopkins worker benefits. Health care, time off, tuition assist, and others were found. Well, it was good to know about those but I didn’t feel those benefits are special, rather I was a little disappointed. As I was keep looking at the site, there was a category triggered my interest. Through this grant, I got my house in Baltimore, and the time required for my commute dramatically decreased. I bought my house near the shuttle stop, and it took for 20 mins to go to work. The only thing I need to do to go to work was just hopping on Johns Hopkins Shuttle. Super easy!
My work efficiency, quality of life, work and life balance, and self developing opportunity were significantly increased. Living near work, especially in a city, it’s a blessing and Johns Hopkins is helping their employee to buy their house in Baltimore.

What is LNYW? (Live Near Your Work), A House Purchasing Grant
LNYW program is a grant given to Johns Hopkins members who want to buy a home in Baltimore city. In 2023, Johns Hopkins gave a free money, up to $14,500 combined with city’s grant, to their members buying a house in Baltimore. It increased up to $17,000 in 2024. This grant allows people to live near Johns Hopkins to enjoy their after work life more so Johns Hopkins members improve their work efficiency.
Who is eligible for LNYW grant?
If you are a full-time employees of the following Johns Hopkins institutions, you can apply for the grant.
Johns Hopkins University
Johns Hopkins Hospital
Johns Hopkins Bayview
Johns Hopkins Community Physicians
Johns Hopkins Health System
Johns Hopkins Health Care
But, following people are not eligible even they are working at Johns Hopkins.
Part-time employees
Intrastaff
Residents
Postdoctoral fellows
Students
Applied Physics Laboratory employees
Johns Hopkins Home Care Group
Pharmaquip employees
Howard County General
Sibley Memorial Hospital
Suburban Hospital
Broadway Services or Kennedy Krieger. (Broadway Services & Kennedy Krieger employees have their own LNYW program through their HR department)
How Much Will I Receive?
Johns Hopkins is offering varied grant amount by the location of the property. The amount is determined by the location of the house you are trying to buy. You can easily check a map if provided by Johns Hopkins Human Resource.
Wherever in Green area
This area includes Charles village and near the Johns Hopkins Hospital
Grant: $17,000.
Wherever in Yellow area
This area includes Remington and the Waverlies
Grant for JHU members: $10,000
Grant for JHH/JHHS: $5,000
As you can see, Johns Hopkins offers different grant amount depending on the location of the property and type of Johns Hopkins institution where you work.

According to Johns Hopkins Human Resource website (Jan 24, 2024), they say your visa status doesn’t matter. As long as you can satisfy the eligibility requirements are met. But definitely you want to check if your loan application can be approved, because this grant is given to workers upon their mortgage loanapproval by their lenders.
